Soda Alternatives

With all the recent articles about the negative effects of soda.. I thought I would share our alternatives. :)

Now don't get me wrong, every now and then I love me a fountain coke.. call it PMS! :)

However soda in general is just bad, and DIET is even worse. Your always better with real sugar then artificial!! YUK!

Anywho, here's some healthy alternatives to soda..

1. Water! yup and lots of it!!

We do ice cubes that will slowly melt all you have ice cold water on hand. Throw in some frozen blueberries, strawberries, raspberries... and it nicely flavors the water... naturally..

Add fresh lemon/lime wedges, fresh orange slices and even some grapes. Adds nice flavor to water.

2. Ice Tea..

We always have a pitcher of tea in the fridge. Usually a regular pitcher. (black tea)  And I prefer an herbal blend. :)  Herbal blends are of course better for you and super tasty. You can sweeten with an organic sugar, demerara, agave or honey! Agave and Honey are both sweeteners that won't raise your insulin levels.

I order through the or use Celestial Seasons Herbal Blends.

Some of my favs are Red raspberry, blueberry pomegranate, chamomile, and any fruit blends. :)  Mint!!! and don't forget Sun Tea!!!

3. Seltzer Water

Make sure you get just regular seltzer water with natural flavorings. Be Careful a lots of Seltzers contain aspartame(gasp! very very bad for you) :)

Again Mix in some fresh lemon/lime wedges. :) Fantastic!!

Your family may balk at your attempts to get them soda free. However, I guarantee you will feel much better and so will they when your all not coming down from soda highs.

Oh I almost forgot... You can make you own ginger ale and root beer!!! Both are fantastic and delicious and easy..

I use the recipes out of my

Save the soda for a special occasion, but beware... once you have the first glass it is very hard to stop!!

14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.

Let's face it, we don't have to go far to make a better choice, we just have to choose to make a better choice for our families! :)

A twist on regular ol' cornbeef...

So what do you do the next day with any left over corned beef.

Well you could make your own, corned beef hash.. I made that this morning, it was delicious!! I didn't take a pic of it tho!!

And for supper, I took the leftovers and made open face sandwiches. You could also substitute the corned beef for pastrami!! :)

So first thing first, toast some Jewish rye bread, why Jewish rye..cause it's the best! :)

Lay in 13x9 pan, pour some thousand island dressing over top of the toasted rye, then add the corned beef or pastrami, a generous helping of coleslaw, then a thick slice of swiss..

bake 30 mins, take out of oven and ENJOY!!

Don't forget to add a half sour pickle!!

This recipe was adapted slightly from the original one shared with me by my friend Adrienne. :)

James 1~a mini series.

I just love the book of James. It's one of my favorite books of the bible.

Why? you ask.  Well, I see myself in James a bit. He's practical. He's pretty straight forward. Here it is, now do it. Done.

How wonderful it is to have such practical wisdom!

I'm currently doing a ladies bible study at church,|780524|1025

I can not tell you how timely this bible study as come into my life.

After all the struggles we have been through the past year, this has been such a pleasure. And what's not awesome about doing an in depth study in one of your own favorite books. Is God awesome or what?

OK, off the tangent...back to James 1.  While doing the study last night, Beth Moore said something that hit me like a ton of bricks.
You see the reason James is so straight forward in his book, is that he lived with Jesus, and missed all this... He missed it. He didn't believe in him, he mocked him... and then AFTER Jesus' resurrection... He GOT IT!!!!  He GOT IT!!!!

How exciting, yet sad all at the same time. Ever have that happen? You just are fighting something to no end. You are not going to allow it, or believe it and then BAM, the Lord reveals it to you. And you do a total 180*.  That was James.

So I believe in his excitement..and in not wanting anyone else to miss it. He writes the book of James with such authority! Don't waste your time trying to figure it out. It's here, in lay mans terms.

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do

Consider our trials joy? Really... Yes!!!!! Why? Because it's a testing of your faith, and that produces perseverance!!! Oh.. OK.. I get it.

Ask God for wisdom, YES, YES, YES!!!! He gives it freely!!!! Remember Solomon?

Key point, But when you ask, you must BELIEVE. Do you believe it when you ask? Or are you whining and complaining to God that you need wisdom, and then you walk away..without waiting for the supernatural whisper of our Lord to comfort you?

The consequences are big if you don't believe the wisdom will come, you are like a ship being tossed about at sea.

I mean really? I love the visuals James gives. Here the action, if you don't do it.. Here's the consequence!!!

Awesome, Awesome stuff!!!!

Double Minded and Unstable in ALL they do... I don't want to be that, do you?
Heck No!!!!

What does the Lord say we are under trials, we are blessed. (v 12) Blessed...

Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Every gift is from above. Our trials are gifts... hard one to swallow, but everything, EVERYTHING that happens to us... GOD is in control of...

We are his first fruits, I want to be a good fruit on that vine.. I want to be a big, juicy, delicious tempting fruit.. Not a shriveled up rotten piece! Or juicy and plump on one side and rotten to the core on the other.

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Oh,  the above pains me at times... quick to listen, yup I can do that, slow to speak, sometimes... I could use more practice...slow to become angry... OUCH, OUCH, OUCH!!! and then read on...  Anger does not produce righteousness!!! YIKES!!!  Yup, need the Lords hand on this one. If he placed it right over my mouth that would be good! :)

Get rid of all moral filth! Hello, it doesn't get any more plainer then that. Get rid of it.

If it is taking you away from serving your God or your family first. Then it has to go. So simple. Don't justify it. Just get rid of it. Throw it out, End it. Period. DONE, OVER!!! Got it???

Humbly accept God's help.. His word will fill your temporary void. And then you will look back and say to yourself, how could I ever have put that above my God, or my family?

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Oh, that is my favorite piece right there!!! Don't merely listen, DO IT...

Seriously!!! Just do it!!!!!! Act on the word of God!!!!  It can't get any easier then this!!!!!!!!!!!!

2324 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

James is just full of action and consequence. I just love it. Do and be blessed or don't and suffer the consequences.

To me the greatest consequence would be to disappoint God. We are his first fruits... Just let it sink in...

I pray that you would make me a ripe, juicy fruit. And I thank you for the practical book of James. May this blog be used to encourage someone along the way. And if you are reading this and don't know our Lord personally.. May you be encouraged to put your life in his hands. He wants to mold you into the person you are desiring to be. A person that will be his first fruit.
In Jesus' Holy and Precious Name.

A New Clothesline!

Hubby built me a FABULOUS, new Clothesline!!!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went from 4 lines, about 15 feet long to 8 glorious lines 25 feet long!!! I can now hang a full days of laundry on the line! For me it's about 4 loads daily.

Laundry is usually started right after my fist sip of coffee! :)

Our dryer is currently down, and hubby hasn't had the time to fix it yet, so this clothesline has been a lifesaver as well as a money saver. I can't believe how much my electric bill has gone down, by not using my dryer or dishwasher. It's actually affordable now! :)

Luckily for me we had a most mild winter. And I have only had to make a few trips to the laundromat to dry.

Thanks Babe! :)

Food Nostalgia

It always amazes me.. the power of food. I mean really there is such a power in food, being around the table to eat.

But I wanted to talk about how memories can be evoked by food.

I  was talking with my cousin the other day and she brought up a simple food that she was eating..

And in my minds eye,(what is your minds eye anyway?)  I immediately had a flashback of being maybe 10 years old , sitting in my grandmothers kitchen as I watched her make me this soup.
It brought back such fond memories of her.  Just the mere mention of a soup... Of course my next time I was  out to the store, I picked some up... :) I'm weird like that. But in my own defense.. I did have a sick little one. She loved the soup.

I can remember waiting for the water to boil and then adding the golden egg to the water.. heehee.. My heart literally swelled with emotion. It's hard to tell too, but those are two boxes, each box is it's own serving of soup..and I can remember how much fun it was to tear apart the boxes. The only thing that has changed from back then to now, it the color blue they use today. When I was a child it was a much lighter blue.

So it got me thinking about how food is so important. And how our memories can be brought back by certain smells or in this case just the mention of a particular brand.

My cousin has been doing that to me a lot lately. BTW, You should check out her blog, it's all about health and beauty...

Our senses are amazing, and it is clinically proven that our sense of smell, can ignite the brain to an emotion. That is pretty cool.

I use to love as a kid, getting off the school bus and being able to  smell what was for dinner before even making it up to the front door!!! That bring back fond memories too.. And I love when my own kids are outside playing and they will come in to ask whats for dinner. Because they can smell it outside.

Just the other day, while heating up lunch for the kiddos, there was a pleasant chatter among my children. It was all five of them clamoring for what leftovers they wanted to eat. " I want the meatballs"... "ooohhh, I want the potato soup" "me too" " is there chicken left" ...

My heart melted hearing them say that stuff. They don't want McDonald's! They don't want processed chicken nuggets.. They want my food. And I'm so glad they do.

I'm a lefty..What does this have to do with anything you say? Well, Lefties are suppose to be creative people. I am NOT! I don't craft well, sew well, draw well, play an instrument well, etc. etc. But, I do cook and bake very well. That is my creative outlet! So I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. And I love every minute of it. I love creating healthy meals for my family.. (More on this in another post)

I do have to say, while I have fond memories of the soup..and it was like I remembered it. It won't be a staple in this house! LOL.. If something has ingredients you can't pronounce, you probably shouldn't be eating it.

Are they any foods that bring up positive memories for you?
